If you live in Australia and love Asian cinema, you will probably be very excited about the lineup of Hong Kong films that will be brought to our screens by Magnum Films in the second half of 2013. These include a sex comedy, two omnibus horror films and two action thrillers from a group of well-known filmmakers including Pang Ho Cheung (Love In A Puff, Vulgaria), Fruit Chan (Made In Hong Kong, Three... Extremes), Gordon Chan (Beast Cops, Painted Skin), Dante Lam (Beast Stalker, The Viral Factor) and the Pang Brothers (The Eye, The Detective). You can check out the details for each film in the gallery below.
Please note that this is a preliminary program only and there may well be other gems added to the line-up along the way. So please check the
Magnum Film Facebook page for updates.
SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (Scheduled release date 25 July)
This sex comedy is written and produced by Pang Ho Cheung, who directed Men Suddenly In Black and last year's hilarious Vulgaria. It stars reliable funnyman Chapman To and Love In A Puff's Shawn Yue. So you can expect coarse language, outrageous plots and plenty of laughs. And do keep an eye out for our giveaway competition to win free movie tickets to see this film.
TALES OF THE DARK 1 & 2 (Scheduled release date 8 August)
Tales From the Dark 1 has just opened in Asia, with the second film soon to follow. In Australia, both films will be screened together as a 190-minute movie marathon for the price of 1! Worth a special mention is that one of the segments marks Simon Yam's directorial debut. The marathon will run at limited cinemas with limited sessions. Magnum Films is taking advanced bookings and you can email AsianCinema@MagnumFilms.com.au for more details.
UNBEATABLE (Scheduled release date 22 August)
This MMA action drama comes from one of Hong Kong's most consistent action directors - Dante Lam. It stars a very muscular Nick Cheung, who has starred in two of Lam's best films, Beast Stalker and Stool Pigeon, and Taiwanese actor Eddie Peng. Early buzz for the film is excellent, and it won Cheung the Best Actor Award and his 10-year old co-star Crystal Lee Best Actress at the recent Shanghai International Film Festival.
INFERNO 3D (Scheduled release date 3 October)
This is the latest film from the Pang Brothers, who came to international fame in 2002 with the horror film The Eye. Their outputs since have been of varying quality, but hopefully they will be able to do justice to the final script from the late screenwriter Szeto Kam Yuen (Expect The Unexpected, A Hero Never Dies, Exiled, SPL, Flash Point, Accident). Inferno 3D stars top actors Lau Ching Wan and Louis Koo, who have collaborated together numerous times.
