Lima is once again standing in for the future in The 2nd Horseman, from first-time director Arthur Cross. Peruvian films rarely travel into science fiction territory, save for some independent, low-budget experimental efforts but this one is clearly aiming to become a sci-fi action blockbuster, a first for the Peruvian market. Cross even credits Michael "Subtlety" Bay as an influence, meaning the arthouse crowd can start running for the hills now.
The story concerns a woman named Serah, member of a government Spec Ops team after the Apocalypse, sent on a mission into the Quarantine Zone. She disappears, only to return a year later bringing with her something that could save the world - or destroy it.Hot on her trail is a fanatic Prophet and his power-mad cult, and it's up to a team of mercenaries known as The 2nd Horseman Unit to intervene.
Looks like a classic sci-fi story. The 2nd Horseman is due for release in early 2014, and will hopefully be seen by as many people as possible; this is the kind of films Peruvian filmmakers should be making if you ask me.
