ScreenAnarchy has been following the development of Laotian ghost story
Chanthaly with great interest over the previous months. And why not? Director Mattie Do has here delivered the first ever Laotian horror film and is herself the first ever female director to make a feature in that country. Throw in a compelling premise and you've definitely got our interest.
Raised alone by her overprotective father sequestered in their home
in Vientiane, Chanthaly suspects that her dead mother's ghost is trying
to deliver a message to her from the afterlife. After a change in
her medication, intended to treat her hereditary heart condition,
causes the hallucinations to cease, Chanthaly must decide whether or not
to risk succumbing to her terminal illness in order to hear her
mother's
last words.
The first trailer for
Chanthaly arrived earlier today and it's a compelling, atmospheric bit of work. Check it out below.
