Since 1998, when she co-starred in the ridiculously massive hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Something Happens), Rani Mukherjee has made a name for herself as a matinee queen. Besides co-headlining films with the best and biggest stars in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Amitabh Bachchan in Black, Abhishek Bachchan in Bunty Aur Babli, Anil Kapoor in Nayak, and recently she's taken on solo headlining roles in films like No One Killed Jessica and has gotten plenty of critical praise. However, since that film back in early 2011, she's been very quiet.
No more! Today the trailer for Aiyyaa debuted online, and it looks like a lot of fun. The film is a co-production of the relatively new AKFPL, the production house of Indian independent kingpin Anurag Kashyap, and Viacom 18, who have a pretty strong record producing quality films with strong stories.Kashyap has brought on Malayalam director Sachin Kandulkar to make the film happen, and if this trailer is any indication, he's got a pretty good eye.
In addition to marking Mukherjee's return to the screen, the film is to the Hindi film debut of Malayalam superstar Prithviraj. The last time we mentioned him here at ScreenAnarchy was in connection with the Malayalam breakout hit, Urumi, in which he played a young Indian boy burning for vengeance against Vasco De Gama. This time around, it looks like he's mainly in the picture to look studly, a job he handles quite capably.
Aiyyaa is scheduled to release in India on October 12th, but beyond that I can't confirm anything. Viacom 18 has a pretty poor track record of releasing their films internationally. The latest victim has been the Gangs of Wasseypur series, but before that, we also missed the Kashyap produced Shaitan, which never saw multiplex screens in the US. According to the eminently reliable Wikipedia, Aiyyaa is being co-distributed by Reliance, which is a good sign, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
I love these goofy, fun, colorful Bollywood films, and doing one on a relatively small scale like this is very appealing. I hope it hits here and if it does I'll certainly review it, fingers crossed.
