Eastern Promises 2 is no more. David Cronenberg's sequel to his Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel starring gang picture was set to roll in October but it would appear that Focus Features have had second thoughts and pulled the plug on the project.
The Playlist caught up to Cronenberg on his Cosmopolis press junket in New York and asked him what would be next and he had this to say: "It was supposed to be 'Eastern Promises 2.' But that's dead ... It's done... If you don't like it talk to James Schamus at Focus. It was his decision."
No firm reasons have been given for the decision but it was definitely not a talent issue. Cronenberg was firmly on board and when I spoke to Vincent Cassel in person at the Astana International Action Film Festival last month he told me excitedly about his plans to come to Toronto and shoot the film as his next project.
