With his roles in The Killing and Safe House perhaps convincing producers that Joel Kinnaman has what it takes to make it in Hollywood the star of Swedish crime series Snabba Cash (Easy Money) has officially signed on as the new Robocop.
Stories have been circulating for about a week that MGM were pursuing Kinnaman for the Jose Padilha directed franchise reboot and according to Deadline the deal is now done and Kinnaman is locked in.
It's a fine choice for the part, too, Kinnaman being a talented and versatile performer who should bring a lot to the table without being encumbered by a lot of preconceived ideas about what sort of star he is. For most in America he's still a blank slate, which is what you want for this sort of role. And that exact quality makes him a surprising choice, honestly, as risk-averse Hollywood never seems to want to put relative unknowns into major parts these days. Is Kinnaman's a sign of changing opinions among the power brokers or simply a total lack of homegrown young talent ready to step up? My guess is a little of both.
