Following behind the teaser released some weeks back there is now a full trailer for Steven Spielberg's upcoming War Horse. Due for release in January 2012 make no mistake about this one, this is Spielberg in his most sentimental mode as he shamelessly manipulates the audience to stir up an emotional response. The thing is, though, he's quite good at it.
The story of the bond between a young man and his horse the film tells the story of the horse first being conscripted into the war and then its owner following behind - signing up to fight despite being too young - to save his beloved companion. It's essentially a romance, then, albeit one between man and beast and executed with all the resources that Steven Spielberg can bring.
As intensely on the nose as all the emotional beats are in the trailer - which is very - there are a few things to like rather a lot. Some of the shots are astounding, for one thing, and when the humans get a chance there's a truly impressive cast on hand. Spielberg has largely gone for character actors here and included are Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Marsan, Toby Kebbell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan and Nicolas Bro amongst others. And that's a hard cast to sneeze at.
