[And we have our winner: @Patrick_Krause will be the lucky recipient of this disc. Thanks to everyone who entered!]
First a little editorializing, but if you just want to enter the contest, feel free to scroll down to the last paragraph for details. Holy crap, it's been 30 years since Joe Dante's The Howling hit screens back in '81. And in the time since, there really haven't been too many particularly successful inroads in the werewolf genre, especially in the last decade or so. Seriously, were there many, if any prominent werewolf movies that have had some measure of mainstream success? Anything to put these types of monster pictures on par with vampires? If I'm willing to give our time frame about an extra year of leeway, I can think of four werewolf movies since 2000 that are worth talking about, and of these, only a couple are actually, you know, good. We've got Ginger Snaps (2000, plus its sequels, but the third one is terrible), Dog Soldiers (2002), Skinwalkers (2006, okay, I didn't even see it, but I remember the poster was striking), and last year's not-so-great The Wolfman.
What I'm saying is, as someone who watched both the first and second Howling movies a lot as a kid (form your own opinion about how that might have messed up my development) along with An American Werewolf In London, it's a sad state of things that this new century hasn't found its definitive werewolf movie yet.
Anyway, writer/director Joe Nimziki is throwing his hat into the ring by circling back and giving us The Howling: Reborn a take on the franchise for the high school set out today on Blu-ray and DVD. The new film stars Lindsey Shaw (10 Things I Hate About You), Landon Liboiron (Terra Nova), and Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale). Anchor Bay has sent along an exclusive clip with the director talking about storyboarding the stunts for the film.
Here's the official synopsis:
On the eve of his high school graduation, Will Kidman (Liboiron) finally looks up from his books to catch the eye of the girl he's longed for the last four years -the mysterious Eliana Wynter (Shaw). He's always been the shy kid, flying under the radar, but when he discovers a dark secret from his past-- that he is heir to a powerful line of werewolves -- he finds he has a choice to make between succumbing to his primal nature, or turning against his own, and maintaining his humanity. In order to fight the destiny of his legacy, and save Eliana - as well as himself - he must battle not only his growing blood lust but an army of fearsome beasts bent on killing him, Eliana...and then, us all.
