George Lucas Eat Your Heart Out! MY DEAR KUTTICHATHAN Prepares To Hit Screens For A Third Time.

My Dear Kuttichathan is the all time biggest grossing film in Malayalam history.  The first 3D film ever made in India was made in Mollywood in 1984 and was a smash hit across the subcontinent. In 1997, the film was dubbed into Hindi as Chhota Chetan, and new footage was shot using "it girl" Urmila Matondkar, and inserted into the film.  Once again, the film did huge business and was a two time blockbuster.  Now, producers at Navodaya are trying to turn the same trick a third time with newly shot footage of contemporary actors, including pan-Indian film star Prakash Raj, and inserting it into a third version of My Dear Kuttichathan 3D.

Only time will tell if this ends up being a good idea, though getting footage from 1984 and 2011 to match is going to be challenge enough.  I haven't seen the film, but this trailer is awesome, even if you don't speak Malayalam.  The best part of the trailer for me is the big Indian film stars showing how to use the 3D glasses in promos.  For those of you not familiar with these actors, the producers got the biggest film stars of the three biggest film industries in India to pitch for the film, Amitabh Bachchan from Bollywood, Rajnikanth from Kollywood, and Chiranjeevi, sporting a kickass lycra top, from Tollywood.  The footage from the film is just the icing on the cake.

Three children befriend a friendly ghost who is named Kuttichathan (meaning little ghost in English and changed as Chhota Chetan in Hindi). A cruel magician (Kottarakkara Sridharan Nair) wants Chathan to lay hands on a treasure. Even though magician is a owner of Chathan, he is burnt and killed by Chathan in the climax. Chathan turns into a bat and flies away (in Hindi version Chhota Chetan it is shown that Urmila gets Chathan and keep it with her, scenes of Urmila Motondkar had been re-shot for Hindi version).

My Dear Kuttichathan 3D 2011 hits theaters August 31st.
