We're kind of in love with John Michael McDonagh's The Guard around these parts, a fact that has made the rather lackluster promotional campaign for the film in its native Ireland a wee bit painful. Thankfully with the US release coming in July, Sony Pictures Classics are now on the scene with their own poster and trailer and things are looking rather a lot better.
THE GUARD is a comedic, fish out of water tale of murder, blackmail, drug trafficking and rural police corruption, and the two cops who must join forces to take on an international drug-smuggling gang, an unorthodox Irish policeman and a straitlaced FBI agent.
Given that this is a fairly straightforward odd couple buddy comedy - something we've seen plenty of times before - you may ask yourself why we love it so much. Simply enough because the buddies - and the actors playing them - are stellar. This is the best Don Cheadle has been in a while - or, at least, the funniest - and Brendan Gleeson simply owns every inch of screen space in the film. He is absolutely hysterical in this. And having Mark Strong as a key villain is never a bad move, either. Check out the new trailer below.
