Really, Magnolia Pictures? Really?
Jacob Tierney's Good Neighbors is one of the great undiscovered gems of Canadian film from the past year. When it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010 nobody really seemed to notice, which is a shame because it's a taut, meticulously crafted little thriller. Which is why I was happy that it was eventually picked up for distribution in the US by Magnolia Pictures because they seemed to be an ideal distributor for this sort of film.
And then Magnolia released their trailer for the film. And it left my fighting the urge to find whoever created it and throttle them in their sleep. Because dropped right in plain view they've gone and included the biggest possible spoiler from the entire film. The big reveal is right there, front and center. Because, you know, why would you want to keep the audience guessing and engaged with the picture as they watch it? Nah, much better to spoon feed them all the major points in advance for free.
Some free advice to all of you reading this. If you have the chance to see this film, do so. If, however, you stumble across the trailer page at Apple, stay the hell away.
