Mikhail Bulgakov's Notorious Cult Novel THE MASTER AND MARGARITA Gets Animated

One of the most notorious novels of the 20th century, Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master And Margarita has a thorny history, the book being in the middle of a fourth draft when Bulgakov died in 1940 and released only in a heavily censored version in 1967. When it finally made it out of the Soviet Union it was widely decried as heretical by right-leaning elements in the west.

A sprawling, time hopping satire of Soviet bureaucracy and religious history, Bulgakov's work is every bit as unique and potent now as it was when it was first written and suppressed. It has been adapted to film and television before and multiple versions appear to be in the works right now but it looks as though first out of the gate will be an animated adaptation out of Russia. The cat in the image above? That'd be Satan incarnate. I'll leave it to you to work out the rest, saying only that I'm very impressed by what they're doing here ...
