Remember the days when Anton Corbijn was telling people that Ian Curtis bio-pic Control was the only movie he would ever direct? The only movie he ever wanted to direct? Yeah, that was a lie. And I'm okay with that, I think, because Corbijn is a talented guy and while his new effort looks lacking in originality it stands a fighting chance of making up for that with style.
The film is The American, what looks to be a fairly by-the-numbers hitman drama starring George Clooney as an aging assassin on one final job before quitting the life. Too bad he has to go and fall for a woman in the process. Yeah, we've seen this story before - many times before, honestly - but Corbijn has a very unique aesthetic that pumps some new life into it. And Clooney looks pretty damn good, too. The man is one of a tiny number of Hollywood stars actually allowing himself to age on screen and he's becoming more and more interesting as a result.
The first trailer for this one has just arrived. Check it below.
