(HALIFAX, May 5, 2010) - Rutger Hauer has been combing the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth as a grizzly-looking Hobo in the gore-action-comedy, Hobo With A Shotgun, now in its third week of production in Nova Scotia.
"We're being very naughty and very dirty and very ugly. We're not trying to make anything pretty. We're not trying to charm anybody. We're saying this is an ugly movie," Hauer said on set, during a break in filming.
Hauer, whose credits include The Hitcher, Blade Runner and Ladyhawke, says he's enjoying working with young Dartmouth-based filmmakers - director Jason Eisener, producer Robert Cotterill and writer John Davies.
Eisener is especially grateful to have Hauer, a familiar face of horror, thriller and sci-fi movies, cast in the leading role.
"Working with Rutger Hauer is amazing. I have to say, I was really intimidated at first because I've only worked with local actors. I've never worked with someone who's had so much experience," Eisener said. "We're having a blast making this film."
Hobo With A Shotgun got rolling after winning the 2007 South by Southwest Film Fest's best fake exploitation trailer contest. The Dartmouth filmmakers collaboration received a cult following after winning the notorious Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse Trailer Competition at SXSW in Austin, Texas. For the last three years, they have been working to give the story its full length treatment.
Since the movie went to camera on April 19, fans have been keeping up to date with behind-the-scenes details and messages from the director and producers on the movie's website www.hobowithashotgun.com.
Hobo With A Shotgun tells the story of a vigilante homeless man who pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city's crime boss reigns. Seeing an urban landscape filled with armed robbers, corrupt cops, abused prostitutes and even a pedophile Santa, the Hobo goes about bringing justice to the city the best way he knows how - with a 20-gauge shotgun. Mayhem ensues when he tries to make things better for the future generation. Street justice will indeed prevail.
Hobo With A Shotgun is produced by Rhombus Media Inc., Whizbang Films and Yer Dead Productions. Producers are Niv Fichman (Rhombus Media Inc.), Frank Siracusa and Paul Gross (Whizbang Films). It will be distributed in Canada by Alliance Films.
