He seems like such a pleasant young man in person but then, that's what they say about all sorts of deviants, now isn't it? Canadian writer-director Karim Hussain has just announced his latest project, the aptly titled Filthy, a film revolving around garbage fetishists. And that's fetish in the true, deriving-sexual-pleasure-from sense, I make sure to point out. Fresh of the success of their Pakistani splatter picture Hell's Ground, Filthy is the first of a slate of new pictures to be announced from the Mondo Macabro lads and they'll be touting the picture to prospective investors in Cannes with a nasty little promo teaser in tow. You'll find details below the break and a larger version of the poster linked below.
FILTHY PRESS RELEASE
Mondo Macabro Movies, hot off the release of HELL’S GROUND, are branching out their production wing to cult directors around the world, including Karim Hussain (SUBCONSCIOUS CRUELTY, THE BEAUTIFUL BEAST, co-writer of Nacho Cerda’s THE ABANDONED) for the project FILTHY. A dark satire, it tells the story of a rich woman in her fifties who falls under the spell of a strange cult of homeless people who derive sexual pleasure from filth. More specifically, from waste produced by the wealthy. It’s a twisted journey into the outlands of fetishism and the absurdity that comes with it.
A teaser trailer was filmed in April and the project will be taken to this year’s Cannes Film Festival to complete its financing.
“It’s my most extreme project since my first film SUBCONSCIOUS CRUELTY,” says Hussain.
“After working on several mainstream projects recently, I wanted to do a smaller, more daring project that can reflect, without censorship, what is going on these days with the most extremes of fetishism and how through the internet and new technologies, they’re becoming mainstream. Nowadays, the most obscure of sexual tastes have groups and conventions, they’re almost becoming fashionable. When a hardcore scatological film from Brazil like TWO GIRLS, ONE CUP becomes a You Tube phenomenon and is being joked about on shows like FAMILY GUY, you know something’s up… More people around the world have probably seen TWO GIRLS, ONE CUP than the latest successful studio release! FILTHY is a satire of the extremes this can go to, all while exploring the ‘special’ tastes of its protagonist without flinching. It’s basically a pitch- black comedy of class that at times will play like a horror film and undoubtedly appeal to a certain kind of open-minded genre fan.”
“It’s always good to re-sharpen your teeth between larger-scale projects, that can sometimes take years to finance, on movies that can really explore what you want to say. FILTHY is the first part of a planned trilogy about “alternative sexuality” and is the most radical of the bunch. It’s also probably the funniest.”
Produced by Andy Starke and Pete Tombs of Mondo Macabro Movies, FILTHY is one of many new projects they are planning. Their background is in the wilder extremes of genre movies and they are keenly aware of the kinds of niche marketing that such product demands, as well as seeing, on a daily basis, the kinds of healthy returns that can be generated if a company is prepared to go “out there” to the edges of good/bad taste.
“Audiences are tired of being spoon fed so much pre-digested entertainment,” says Andy Starke. “We know from the movies we’ve already been involved with, that there’s a large and growing audience for films that test the boundaries of taste. And so long as it’s done with style and humor, this kind of project can really succeed in a market place saturated with low budget Hollywood wannabees”.
