THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE

the Special Jury Prize underlines the amazing performances of the two actors Lluís Carbó and Lluís Serrat in Honor de Cavalleria and the tour de force of the entire cast of The Guatemalan Handshake. The two Spanish actors offer so much with so little; and a collection of moments of strangeness and sadness is brought to life by the natural and authentic performances of the entire American cast.

for Todd Rohal’s talent; he is an extremely talented filmmaker, and his vigorous language and cutting humor have created an anarchical and human world.

for the ability to let the human and meek human dimension of a courageous and exemplary woman emerge from the fabric of official politics.

defining it a dissonant educational story for families, a subversive mise-en-scène of games, moods, looks and objects of desire.

The Jury of the Cipputi Prize of the 24th Torino Film Festival, composed of Cesare Annibaldi, Roberto Mania, Claudio Mellana, Valter Musso, Luca Pasquadibisceglie, awards the 2006 Cipputi Prize:

Best film about the working world (2,600 Euros) to:

IL LATO GROTTESCO DELLA VITA
by Federica Di Giacomo (Italy, 2006, Beta SP, 75’)

the film, which was shot in contemporary, real-life Matera, uses irony and lightness as it uses the stories of invented, unauthorized jobs to show the daily life of a community that resists desperation, that doesn’t want to flee from its doubtlessly difficult condition. Paradoxically, the people, who are well characterized, don’t seem depressed or resigned to their working conditions, but on the contrary express an improbable creativity.

The Torino Film Festival awards the Cipputi Award for lifetime achievement to Joaquín Jordá


FIPRESCI PRIZE

The Jury of the Fipresci Prize of the 24th Torino Film Festival, presided over by Peter Keough (USA) and composed of Rich Cline (USA), Magda Mihailescu (Romania), Cristiana Paternò (Italy), Floreal Peleato (Spain) awards the following Prize:

Best Competing Feature Film to:

ZAPISKI PUTEVOGO OBKHODCHIKA - NOTES BY A TRACKMAN
by Zhanabek Zhetyruov (Kazakhstan, 2006, 35 mm, 64’)

for its simplicity, for its ability to show details and for the precision with which it tells a story that is tied to a particular culture and yet is absolutely universal. In only 64 minutes, Notes by a Trackman is a practically perfect film.

The Jury also awards a special mention to:

BLED NUMBER ONE
by Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche (France-Algeria, 2005,35 mm, 97’)

for the natural style, almost borrowed from true life, with which it delves into the painful contradictions of a small community torn by fundamentalism, through the two separate destinies of exclusion and disintegration.


FILMCRITICA “BASTONE BIANCO” PRIZE

The jury of the Filmcritica Bastone Bianco Prize of the 24th Torino Film Festival, composed of Edoardo Bruno, Alessandro Cappabianca, Daniele Dottorini, Simone Emiliani, Grazia Paganelli, Bruno Roberti, Daniela Turco, after taking into consideration the films presented in the sections Feature Film Competition, Out of Competition, Detours, Americana, awards the following Prize:

INVITATION TO THE SCUOLA HOLDEN PRIZE

The Jury of the Invitaiton to the Scuola Holden Prize for the best screenplay among the Feature Films competing in the 24th Torino Film Festival, composed of the students of the Master’s degree course in narrative technique, awards the following Prize:

Holden Prize for screenplays ( 1,500 Euros)- The winner is invited to conduct a 3-day workshop at the Scuola Holden to:

for the absolute creative liberty with which the author has reinterpreted archeological documentaries, working on the stratifications of sound and visual materials and demonstrating a mature and incisively political stylistic approach.

The Jury of the Avanti!
