Distribution rights for Kiyoshi Sasabe's Sea Without Exit (Deguchi no nai umi) are to be offered for sale by Shochiku Co. Ltd. (Shôchiku K.K.) at this year's American Film Market (AFM) in Santa Monica, California. The movie is scheduled to be screened at the Laemmle Monica #2 on Wednesday November 1st at 8:45 a.m., and at the Laemmle Monica #1 on Saturday November 4th at 5:00 p.m.. It had what appears to have been its world première at the World Film Festival (Festival des Films du Monde) in Montréal on August 25th. Shochiku released it theatrically in Japan on September 16th.
The screenplay for Sea Without Exit (Deguchi no nai umi) was written by Yôji Yamada and Motofumi Tomikawa, based on the eponymous novel Deguchi no nai umi by Hideo Yokoyama. The movie's principal cast is as follows: Ebizô Ichikawa XI, Yûsuke Iseya, Juri Ueno, Shun Shioya, Shûji Kashiwabara, Mitsunori Isaki, Teruyuki Kagawa, Yûko Kotegawa, and Tomokazu Miura.
Here's a synopsis for Sea Without Exit from ShochikuFilms.com - Shochiku's English-language website: "Koji Namiki, a talented young pitcher, who had won the National High School Baseball Championships enters university, but soon afterwards injures his elbow. He and his teammates work hard to get back on the field placing all his hopes on a new slow-ball, 'the magic pitch.' However, the outbreak of WWII wipes out the baseball ambitions from everyone. They join the military and in the navy undergo the severe training that prepares them for death. Death awaits them in a 'kaiten' (special attack submarine or 'human torpedo') within the gloomy ocean depths, but Koji never gives up his dream of the 'magic pitch.'"
