Reasoner demands equal recognition for the little label that could. Dark Sky Films has taken the little they have in some great directions releasing a mix of the twonky, the obscure, and the truly classic in exploitation and genre film. Here are just some of the reasons you should check out their DVD's
1. Magic, Magic Magic. The release of the ultimate ventrolquist horror movie is reason alone to think these guys have something on the ball. No audio commentary but some nice interviews and a ton of the original advertising promos that gave kids all over the country nightmares. Not only is Fats the creepiest dummy ever but this film offers one of Anthony Hopkins greatest performances.
2. Terror Beneath the Sea. Attention ScreenAnarchistss this gloeriously goofy Sonny Chiba sci-fi action adventure deserves you kindest attention. It is twonky, gloriously colorful and would make a great double feature with any of the Flint movies.
3. Werewolves on Wheels. Do I really recommend this? Heck. Fast forward the topless snake dancing sequence and enjoy being able to tell your friends you saw a movie called Werewolves on Wheels. "Get out," they'll say. "No, it really exists," you ‘ll say. You'll go on to tell them about Severn Darden- one of the great but underuused character actors of the seventies. If you're among the faithful you'll recount that no less a Christian Music luminary than Mr "Eve of Destruction" himself Barry Maguire also stars in this film. And of course there's no ignoring director Levesque's brilliant work that led to him directing 1977's breakaway “forget Star Wars” supersmash The Incredible Melting Man.
4. Dark Shadows. Okay technically this isn't put out by Dark Sky but by their parent company MPI Home Video. MPI is the reason Dark Sky exists and looking at their catalogue Dark Sky seems like a perfect match. Releasing a series like Dark Shadows in beautiful packagaing, with tons of extras on a consistent basis is nothing less than a labor of love and horror historians are going to thank MPI someday if for nothing else than for making this and every other major Dan Curtis project available.
5. The Horror of Party Beach/The Curse of the Living Corpse. Del Tenney was one of the early schlockmeisters and his movies are more fun than most./ Especially his early sixties stuff. Paper Mache never had a better friend and I suspect the
6. Henry Portrait of A Serial Killer 2 Disc Set. Oh My Gosh. This is clearly the crowning glory of Dark Sky's lineup.
7. Future DVD's include Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster, a Drive-in Double Feature of Creation Of The Humanoids/War Between the Planets and more Sonny Chiba in the Drive-in Double Feature Prince of Space/Invasion of the Neptune Men!!!
