Have Your Say: Judging by Avatar's success, is 3D-film on its way to replace regular film?

 

It's official: one month after its premiere, James Cameron's "Avatar" is now the number two top grossing film of all time. And this weekend it also won the Golden Globe for "Best Drama".

 

You can safely say that a large chunk of these two successes had to do with the fact that "Avatar" is a 3D-film. If you look just at the amounts of tickets sold, "Avatar" barely grazes the top-100 of most-seen movies, but because the tickets for a 3D-film of this length are expensive (and lots of people bought them anyway) it got itself into the top 2 so quickly.

The same can be said for the Golden Globe(s): the awards were given to "Avatar" because of its incredible sense of immersion and spectacle, both of which were immensely enhanced by the 3D-effects in the film.

 

 

So this begs the question: now that 3D-technology has been put on the map like NEVER before, will this in time (mostly) replace regular 2D film?
