New JUSTICE LEAGUE Trailer Aims For Laughs, Looks Drab

WB and DC have dropped a new trailer for Zach Snyder's Justice League cosplay feature film. They try to go for as many quips, jokes, gags and cheesy one-liners as is possible in the totally drab DCEU.

At this point in the epic fumble that is getting the DC heroes to a cinematic shared universe, you have either been forgiving of these flicks and will park your keister for another outing, or else you checked out way back when Snyder's Man of Steel arrived. Because as we all know, in 2017 gray areas do not exist. It's either all or nothing. Zero or Eleven. March Madness or just March.

As to what this film is about... well, judging from the trailer, Ben Affleck's Batman is inspired by Pokemon enthusiasts the world over and wants to collect super powered beings to prepare for an oncoming threat. No, excuse me, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman says that threat is already here. That threat appears to be flying mechanical monkeys, which if you've seen the LEGO Batman Movie actually makes a good lick of sense.

I wish more than anything they would stop using that horrible grey filter on their movies.

Also, I really hope I didn't see all of the humorous bits in the whole movie.

  • Wheez Von Klaw

You keep wanting to tell Snyder "Dude, turn up your brightness on your phone".Trouble is Zack loves grey and drab. I bet he paints his house grey.

  • Jim Hat

I'd be absolutely one hundred percent willing to give this some benefit of the doubt if it weren't for bumface.

  • Dermacka

It's amazing how quckly they keep pumping out these lego movies

  • Pat

I checked out after the steller intro to Man of Steel. Everything has been meh after that.

  • angryguy77

let e guess....all the necakbeards are going to hate this because it's not like a marvle movie?
I guess without the kiddie jokes and lame plots, no DC movie will be loved by critics.

  • Wheez Von Klaw

I think DC fans deserve more than the pretentious little brother of Michael Bay.

That's because they're not good films, it's not because they're DC. Cast your mind faaaaaaaar back to the period of DC legend, 2005-2012, when Chris Nolan was making DC films that were critically acclaimed and financially successful. People loved them. After DC's big success with Batman Begins came Marvel's shot, which went very well. Again, people loved them, and continue to do so. But then came DC's second bite at the cherry without Nolan's creative genius; it went ok with MoS, which was an alright film with lots of crappy bits. Then came BvS - let's be honest, it's an absolute mess of a film. But then, the absolute nadir of superhero film-making (apart from maybe The Spirit): Suicide Squad. I'm not wasting another keystroke talking about that film. You need to face reality, the post-Nolan DC cinematic universe is a mess while Marvel's is going great. I don't say that because i prefer Marvel, i used to read DC Vertigo's stuff religiously and never read much Marvel at all. I'm saying it because it's obvious to anyone who cares to actually look impartially at the situation. Did Affleck quit directing The Batman because it's all going so well? Is The Batman now being delayed/scrapped/rewritten because it's such an amazing film they don't know how the audience will deal with its greatness? DC and WB have no idea what they're doing, they're throwing mud at a wall and hoping some of it sticks. It's throwing good money after bad and praying somebody likes it. You're fooling yourself.

Looks unbelievably awful, the death of cinema. Pure fascism

'Zach Snyder's Justice League cosplay feature film. ' LoLd at this <
I definitely checked out after Man of Steel but just been curious if they'll ever pick up. Will the DCU pull a recent Shamalan revival?

I actually kind of liked this. As for trailers go these days I got into it. Nice use of the Beetles "come together" lyrics. Sure it's still got that unnecessary dark look to a bunch of brightly colored heroes but at least Aquaman seems to be someone they're making out to be a scene stealer.

Woman Woman not doing much here. Cyborg looks CyBORING. Flash is fast. Yup. And hey! At least Batman acknowledged his superpower......................is being rich. *facepalm*

  • wabalicious

Looks like another enormous waste of WB's money and the audience's time.

  • Brian Black

Based on what exactly? It's just a bunch of action shots and a few innocuous humors

  • Wheez Von Klaw

The Aerosmith cover is fucking lame. You just know Zack Snyder listens to Huey Lewis and the News when he jerks off to shirtless instagram pics of the Hairy Hunk Momoa.

  • wabalicious

It's just another by-the-numbers, clichéd, boring promo with a rubbish cover version of a song that has no place in the trailer. It's some superheroes facing down some threat which doesn't seem to be explained apart from those little flying things from Batman's dream in the last film. Who are they? Why should we be scared of them? Who is the main villain? Why is any of this happening? Trailers used to tell the story of what you could expect from the film, now it's just a random assortment of nonsense and bad one-liners with that big, overused "BBBBVVVVVVVVVVVVVV!" noise to suggest something epic is happening. At least the Suicide Squad trailer actually attempted to tell the story of what the film was about and who the villains were (as awful as that film was), even if it turned out to not really be accurate. Based on that trailer what is the film actually about? Some heroes band together to... what? Fight CGI insectoids? As you said, "It's just a bunch of action shots and a few innocuous humors", that's absolutely true, but it fails to do the basic job of a trailer, to inform and excite me about the film. it should be more than just a bunch of shots.

  • angryguy77

anyone who is a DC fan and who watched BvS knows what the plot is going to be about.

It's clear as day what the movie is about for even those that didn't see any prior DC movies: The JL is coming together to fight a world-threatening menace.

For the rest of us, Darksied is coming.

I swear people will look for anything to bash these movies. If they had given away the plot, you would be saying the best parts of the movie were given away in the trailer.

  • wabalicious

Not really. I watched BvS and i have no idea who Darksied is, did they explain that anywhere in the film? Did they mention Darksied in a way that could be understood by someone who isn't looking out for tiny clues that only a rabid fan would get? No they did not. It's not clear as day, nothing in these films is because they either didn't think to fill in the dots for ordinary folk who may just want to see a superhero film and have a good time. I shouldn't have to have read every issue of a comic to understand a comic film. That's where Marvel succeeds and the new crop of DC films have failed. Marvel wants to make accessible films to entertain while DC wants to make black, downbeat guff that pretends to be weighty when there's really nothing of substance there. This is not bashing for the sake of bashing; i want to be entertained and these films are not entertaining, that's the bottom line here.

  • Brian Black

Well this is way more articulate of a response than i'm used to getting on these forums so i appreciate that. i think it was their goal to make more of a "glory" shot reel than something that gives away the plot. this is the trailer for JUSTICE LEAGUE, which everyone already knows the basic content of and already knows whether or not they want to see. it's their old-fashioned "playing it safe, sure thing" in contrast to the sprawling gamble of BvS, and they're advertising it as such, down to the dad-rock and the one-liners, which i didn't think were particularly shitty unless you just don't like one-liners. the trailers for the avengers were very by-the-numbers and visual as well. it makes sense that they're selling this one as the most generic guilt-free happy meal you can imagine, and knowing Snyder i'm sure the actual film will have a shitton of perverse quirks and goofy creative choices that will piss off people hoping for something more straightforward.

  • wabalicious

I'm torn on Snyder; on one hand i thought Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead were fantastic, but his other stuff, while visually striking, hasn't appealed to me much. BvS was ok, although i only saw the extended version, MoS was a bit stiff and straight-faced. Hopefully this will be good but so far DC haven't really given me what i'd hoped for somehow. They have all the ingredients but it's hasn't quite come together in the way that Marvel's films have. I used to read a lot of comics and if anything DC's stuff was more to my taste, more adult, than Marvel's, but in the films so far i've found Marvel's lighter approach a lot more enjoyable. Anyway, i could well be totally wrong about this one, i hope DC are able to pull it back and enjoy the same kind of critical success as Marvel have been.

WATCHMEN remains my favourite Superhero film, with Ang Lee's HULK being a close second

  • marll

wow , you are the first person i have seen who actually likes Ang Lee's Hulk. i love it. it is far superior to the Edward Norton wreck. it took a lot of risks for a superhero film. it even has what i can only describe as 'transcendent', poetic moments. it is in a different (justice) league...
-> "Zach Snyder's Justice League cosplay feature film"
    totally on the money.
shame, zack snyder seems to be trapped in a limited visual vocabulary, similar to peeps like michael bay.. still, i will probably want to see it... sigh... but i have zero expectations and will be acutely aware that the 'humor' is cynically tacked on after the roasting that BvS got for being to dark and to humorless.
ps. my own opinion ; i LOATHE Watchmen. it is so horribly bungled. and features the worst love scene in cinema history.

  • wabalicious

What a film Watchmen is, and from a director who most probably didn't expect would be able to do it as well. It's pretty astounding. Hulk was fantastic also, some people don't seem to rate it very highly but it seems like Ang Lee was having lots of fun with it. It's great.

  • Deez

    Pass.

  • Yojimbo

I am not very interested in this film and have not watched the trailer but then you wrote this "That threat appears to be flying mechanical monkeys" DAMN YOU!! Mr Umstead.

  • Ben Umstead

Apart from a version with no wings, they were the only discernible threat visualized in the trailer, so yeah...

  • ManateeAdvocate

    yikes

  • Its so blue. Then a bit of orange. Then blue again! Mostly blue.

    Or. Blah.

  • Or blech.
