Crowdfund This: Mexico's Ambulante Going To California

Mexican stars Gael García and Diego Luna need your help.

For almost a decade now, they have been known in Mexico not only for their acting but also as film producers and distributors. Together with Pablo Cruz, García and Luna founded in 2005 the film company Canana and the traveling documentary film festival Ambulante, which has brought to several Mexican states, during its latest editions, such docs as Searching for Sugar Man, Blackfish, and The Square.

Canana itself has produced movies like Miss Bala and this year's Cesar Chavez, as well as been responsible of theatrical and home distribution in Mexico for such films as Only God Forgives and The Master.

Now García and Luna are heading to Kickstarter, trying to expand their duties to the United States. In short, they want to take Ambulante to California in September and October (with nothing but "free documentary cinema happenings"), and need some money to do so. Their Kickstarter campaign lasts until July 16, and perks include signed Y Tu Mamá También Criterion discs, 35mm strips of Luna's Abel, and access to some premieres and parties.

Ambulante California emerges as part of AMBULANTE GLOBAL, and represents the first official attempt to establish a long-term presence outside of Latin America of the successful touring documentary platform across the United States.

From September 21 to October 4 Ambulante California will travel and tap into Los Angeles' vibrant multi-ethnic neighborhoods to engage and activate audiences. In partnership with community organizations, the aim is to activate unique, itinerant exhibition spaces to present stories that reflect communities' diverse heritage, enhance cross-cultural appreciation of other viewpoints and overall bridge the gap of accessibility when it comes to the exhibition of innovative documentary cinema.

Ambulante in the California context seeks to integrate its participatory platform with the diverse ecosystem of sub-cultures found within the sprawling and decentralized population to foster artistic expression and connect communities.
