BREAKING: Tom Hardy Backs Out Of Miike's THE OUTSIDER, Preproduction Put On Hold
Looking forward to seeing Tom Hardy in the lead of Miike Takashi's English language feature The Outsider? Brace yourself for disappointment. ScreenAnarchy has learned that, with preproduction already under way, Hardy has backed out of the project and will no longer star. While the search is apparently on for a replacement preproduction has been put on hold and with director Miike committed to multiple projects in 2014 we are also told that Hardy's departure will push the film outside of Miike's window of availability meaning the film is also in the market for a new director. Will producers be able to come up with an alternate and keep the project together? Time will tell ...

I imagine he and his managers finally discovered some of the joys of working within the Japanese film industry.

It's OK. I'll do it.

I read the script for a Taiwanese distributor and thought it was really good but Hardy wasn't such a great match for the part (this is, of course, just my opinion). I advised for investment/prepurchase of the rights nonetheless, but the producers were actually asking for more than the film's potential success on the local market. In the end, we (like others, I guess) didn't invest. So maybe there's that, too.
