Ayacucho International Film Festival Announces Its First Edition

In recent years, Peru has become home to many film festivals. Joining the veteran Lima Film Fest, which wrapped up its 17th edition a couple of months ago, are other events such as Lima Independiente, focused on indie films; the Latin American Digital Film Festival (FIACID); Transcinema Non-Fiction Film Festival; and Outfest, for gay and lesbian themed films. Local film fans are certainly spoiled for choice, and now they have another event to look forward to, the recently announced Ayacucho International Film Festival (FICA)

The fest has the distinction of being the first of its kind to be held outside the capital city of Lima, usually the go-to host for events of this type. This break in tradition represents a chance to bring the best in local and international cinema to regional audiences, as well as give local filmmakers a showcase for their work.

FICA's first edition will be held from 8 -15 December, during the annual celebrations of the Battle of Ayacucho, which was the last skirmish in the War for Independence in South America; it represented the definitive end of Spanish colonial rule in the continent.

The Festival will include competitions for International and Peruvian films, as well as alternate programs, workshops and seminars. The submissions process is currently underway, and official programming will be announced in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, FICA has released an early promo, which highlights not only Latin American cinema, but the beauty and culture of Ayacucho. Watch it below.
