China Box Office: PACIFIC RIM Fends Off TINY TIMES 2 Assault
Guillermo del Toro's giant monster-mecha mash survives a spirited assault from locally produced girly drama Tiny Times 2 to stay top of the Chinese box office for the second week running.

Novelist-turned-filmmaker Guo Jingming scores a second consecutive hit, as the sequel to her debut, Tiny Times, arrives a little over a month later and pulls a huge RMB165 Million in its first four days. However, even that impressive haul wasn't enough to knock Pacific Rim off the top spot. The science fiction beat-'em up only saw a slight drop in its second week on release, pulling in another RMB206 Million in its second week, bringing its 12-day total to just shy of RMB500 Million.

Elsewhere, Fast & Furious 6 saw a massive drop in its third week, but now stands at RMB385 Million, while the only other Hollywood title in the Top 10 is Roland Emmerich's White House Down, which looks to be done after three weeks on release and a RMB170 Million catch.

Local product dominates the chart this week. Beyond Tiny Times 2, Fan Bing Bing-starrer One Night Surprise scored a healthy opening, no doubt due in large part to the lingering popularity of its lead actress. The China/Hong Kong co-production debuts in 4th place, with an opening weekend take of RMB45 Million. Thriller Crimes of Passion, starring Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming could only muster a RMB13.5 Million in its opening weekend, however, while homegrown animation I Love Wolffy 2 took its two week total to RMB64 MIllion as the only real family-friendly option on release.

A raft of child and youth focused Chinese films open this week, including The Best Kids, Train Heroes and Lips and Souls. Dante Lam's MMA drama Unbeatable also has its mainland debut, where it should perform strongly, while Universal's 3D release of Jurassic Park is set to arrive on 20 August, followed closely by Pixar's Monsters University on the 23rd.
