The great Polish filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the fine folks at Fantasia International Film Festival. And you, dear Montreal resident and/or visitor, may enjoy the privilege of watching the man receive his award, and then see his erotic horror masterpiece Szamanka, a rare opportunity to see the film in 35mm. And then an onstage interview will be conducted by Daniel Bird, followed by a Q&A with the audience. And then you will emerge a new, twisted person...
First, a few words about Mr. Zulawski, borrowed from the festival notes:
A gifted and enormously unconventional talent, Zulawski has created some of the most breathtakingly unique films you will ever see. Feverishly cinematic and often controversial works (the filmmaker left Poland for years when his second feature, DIABEL, was banned outright by authorities), Zulawski's filmography explodes with dizzyingly evocative imagery, primal, animalistic performances and raw sexuality and emotion. His work pulverizes societal norms with surrealism, grotesquerie and, above all else, honesty, buzzing ferociously with poetry and an eccentric sense of humour. He has remained pure throughout his career, never compromising for the sake of mainstream appeal. We invite you to join us in celebrating the astonishing work of Andrzej Zulawski, one-of-a-kind genius of cinema.
So rush to your email-sending devices and be quick about it! This will be a special night and you don't want to miss out. Read more about the film and the screening here.
Update: To tease you further, we've added a trailer for the film, prepared by The Cinefamily in Los Angeles, for a screening they had back in March. But don't be confused! The Fantasia award presentation and screening is still Thursday, July 25 at 10:00 p.m.
