Herschell Gordon Lewis is one of the most polarizing figures in horror for a number of reasons. He, along with producer David Friedman, introduced the idea of the gore film to the drive-in masses and changed the face of modern horror. This is the root from which explicit horror has grown, everything from the Gialli of the late 60's to the 80's Euro-gore boom to modern torture porn finds its origins in his no-budget features like Blood Feast and Two Thousand Maniacs. It's pretty hard to argue that the quality of his films varies wildly, some are wildly entertaining horror comedies (like Two Thousand Maniacs) and others are, um, not.
Regardless of that, the man soldiers on. After a long hiatus from the movie business during which he went into advertising (with a large degree of success), Lewis is back on the scene. In his absence he became an iconic figure, so much so that he was able to start up his own projects that were reasonably well-received like 2001 Maniacs.
Now Lewis and producer Marc Fernandez are looking for funds for a horror anthology titled Zombificador. Here's their pitch:
Zombificador is an old-style anthology movie, with several stories that interconnect with each other in some point. From big fat monsters with the ability of transforming people into savage creatures, to human-sized mutant bugs, along with talking puppets and silent psycho killers, that's what Zombificador is all about.
With five different stories, Zombificador will be the goriest and grossest movie ever made by Herschell Gordon Lewis.
In a comeback to his classic gore films, we are proud to present you with the wildest movie ever made by the "Godfather of Gore", the most important horror filmmaker and the inventor of Gore.
As one of the many Lewis acolytes roaming the Earth, I'm certainly interested to see what could come of this. If you're like me, the team are looking for about $100K, and the link to the IndieGoGo project can be found below. Do what you feel.
