Full Trailer For Dhanush & Bharatbala's MARIYAAN Is Impressive
You may not know who Dhanush is, but you should. At the tender young age of 29, Dhanush K. Raja has already made a name for himself as one of the most talented actors in India, specifically in the Tamil film industry. While Bollywood take most of the glory, it is Tamil filmmakers like Bala (Naan Kadavul), Mani Ratnam (Bombay, Kadal, Dil Se), and Dhanush's own brother Selvaraghavan (Mayakkam Enna) have made the Tamil industry into the prestige industry.

Dhanush has a pair of high profile projects on the immediate horizon, both of which we'll be covering, but the first is a Tamil feature from Hari Om director, Bharatbala titled Mariyaan. There's been a teaser floating around the Internet for weeks, but there wasn't much to it, so I decided to wait until some more substantial footage appeared and it was well worth the wait. Dhanush appears as the title character, Mariyaan, a fisherman in South India who is forced to leave his love and go to Africa where he learns life lessons the hard way.

The film not only features Dhanush and Bhatarbala, but also the Oscar winning composer A.R. Rahman, who has thankfully not abandoned his Indian origins for big Hollywood bucks, because he consistently makes great music, even for mediocre films. Also in the cast with Dhanush as his love interest is Parvathi Menon, and there's even a supporting role for another big name in Indian drama, Salim Kumar, the star of India's 2011 Oscar submission, Abu, Son of Adam.

Enough of my blabbering, I think the trailer speaks for itself. Apart from the brief bit of dancing, which is to be expected but feels out of place here, the footage looks amazing and I can't wait to check this out. Very soon Dhanush will be making his Hindi language debut in a solid looking Bollywood romance called Raanjhanaa, we'll have more coverage of that soon as well. In the meantime, here's the synopsis and trailer for Mariyaan.
Mariyaan is a film inspired by true events. It is a story of a spirited, young fisherman called Mariyaan, who had to leave his love and his home to a distant land. Its a film about power of love and the will to survive against all odds.
