ENDER'S GAME Trailer Offers Nothing New in Blockbuster Landscape
I understand that there is some Hollywood rule out there that all Hero-Journey Blockbuster (tm) trailers have to look alike.  I understand that if you have Harrison Ford in your movie that you might as well use his voice to sell your movie.  What I do not understand is whether Gavin Hood aims to preserve the tone of Ender's Game, very much from a young (if extraordinarily gifted) child's point of view, instead of indulging in noisy action blockbuster familiarity.

Two things:  Haliee Steinfeld (the young lead from the Coen's remake of True Grit) goes a fair way in confirming her acting ability with nothing more a single glance on screen.  It is delightful to see Viola Davis back in Solaris mode; she should be in more science fiction films.

The boys, including Ben Kingsley in Mr. Nobody styled facial tats, are less compelling, as are the explosions.  Your mileage may vary.

More about Ender's Game

  • ikilledbambi

when will they make a blockbuster about hitlerjugend?

  • margoland

a big budget scifi brad pitt starring cgi 3d event version to that

  • Marc

Is there a button in Avid or Final Cut labeled Bass-Drop at 1:30? So sick of it..

  • buton

Sir Ben Kingsley is an Oscar winner.

  • Cedric Chou Ya-Li

Smells like DVD rental to me!

  • That One Guy

This trailer makes it seem like it's related to the Hunger Games movie (which I'm sure they didn't intend).

  • kenton

Every other sci-fi film has taken ideas from Ender's Game is some form. So saying it offers nothing new IS COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS BECAUSE THE BOOK CAM EOUT LONG BEFORE ALL THESE BLOCKBUSTERS YOUR COMPARING IT TO!

  • Martin Wagner

I wasn't aware there were no sci-fi films made before 1985. Had this crazy idea Star Wars and 2001 were a little older.

  • And Blade Runner. And Alien.

  • kidlazarus

a little something from 1902: A Trip to the Moon.

Metropolis... Things to Come... Forbidden Planet...

Not to mention authors ranging from HG Wells, Asimov,
Bradbury, Clarke, Lem, Philip K Dick...

It's funny as I'd buy that statement from something like a JOHN CARTER OF MARS, but absolutely not from ENDER'S GAME.

  • margoland

ultimately is just devastation of good (legendary?) literary works.

  • That's because given when John Carter was written versus when Ender's Game was written, there's actually a plausible case to be made there. Saying that a book published in 1985 is the ultimate source of all scifi is just ridiculous. Or the product of someone born in the 1990s who feels like history more or less started around the same time they did.

  • That's just a categorically ridiculous statement by someone who clearly has no sense of history.

  • Kurt

Hardly. I like the book a lot and read it often, but much of the great sci-fi came out a long time before 1985, and the novel is not really the rosetta stone you make it out to be.

But yea, the Strategy/BattleRoom stuff is excellent and rather iconic stuff. This is probably what they should have emphasized this trailer.

I'm curious how a trailer would have looked if they cut it like a 'military sports' film instead of something so generic as this.

  • Martin Wagner

I guess the generic action sales pitch is designed for people who aren't familiar with the book. But what will make or break the movie is if they keep the dark and cynical ending, which contains the book's whole point, as well as the subplot involving Peter and Valentine.

  • TasteYourParty

Were there Academy Award Nominated actors in this trailer? I couldn't tell...

  • Sengoku

    This looks pretty terrible....

  • Estel77

    Agreed. Looks terribly bland.
