Kitamura Says He's Bringing Sakaguchi Back For VERSUS Sequel In 2014
This should be great news for any fans of Versus, the frenetic, low-budget, crazy action film from Japan in 2000 that has become a cult favorite over the years: Director Kitamura Ryuhei will be making a sequel some time next year. He made the announcement when he was on stage promoting his new Hollywood film No One Lives

Kitamura also expressed his confidence that Sakaguchi Tak, star of the original Versus (and other action films like Shinobi and Yakuza Weapon), will appear in the sequel. "The lead actor (Sakaguchi Tak) is retired, but I'll get him to make a comeback. He'll do it if I do it," Kitamura commented.

Does anybody know what happened to "Marble City" with Nicolas Cage and Mickey Rourke? I thought that was gonna be Kitamura's next film, but there's been nothing since the announcement...

  • If you take a look at the Stealth Media website - the company backing that one - you'll see that the ratio of films they announce to the number of films they actually make is pretty dramatic. I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. The market poster was pretty damn hilarious, though.

Tak Sakaguchi & Yudai Yamaguchi were at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival a few weeks ago and were discussing recent and future projects. One was a project with Sion Sono (I really didn't know or guess it was going to be so big and cool as "Why Don't You Play In Hell?"), and another one was going to be an action movie, and I don't think they were talking about a Versus sequel ...

Anyway there was no talk at all about retirement, to the contrary ...
But I guess if they are going to do a Versus Sequel Yudai Yamaguchi will sure also be part of the creative team : )

So this simultaneously confirms and debunks Sakaguchi's retirement. Seems about right.

I'll believe it when I see some footage. He's been talking about Versus 2 and American Versus for the last few years.

I completely agree! Kitamura has been all talk and no show and it's been about, what? Five years since he first announced a sequel/US remake?

Kitamura has been known for lagging it, so I wouldn't be surprised if the VERSUS 2 delay is due to laziness rather than financial concern.

  • Not at all. I know producers that have been working for years trying to get it going and it doesn't come down to Kitamura. It's been rights and financial issues all along.

    I am excited.
