Review: Roman Porno Double Feature -- I LOVE IT FROM BEHIND! and SEX HUNTER: WET TARGET
I Love It From Behind! and Sex Hunter: Wet Target are spine numbers #10 and #11 for those playing along at home, and between the pair I may have a new contender for a favorite in the series, I'll get to that more later.

Impulse have done a great job of mixing up these paired releases, there's typically been one roughie and one that's a little bit different, either a comedy or something significantly less violent, and that's the case here. It works really well for me because I will typically watch these as a double feature before writing them up, and all of that aggression for three hours in a row might get to me. This way I'm able to take a breather from the violence and get some good giggles in. Now, on with the show!

Despite its evocative title, I Love It From Behind! is not about a girl (or boy) who, um, loves it from behind. Perhaps a bit disappointing to those purchasing it solely based on the title, but the film is actually a lot more fun than it sounds. This is the story of a young bride to be who has made a hobby of collecting penis prints. Yup. She slathers her partner's manly business in ink and presses it onto paper, leaving her with a reminder of her conquests. As her marriage date draws nearer, young Mimei realizes that she's well short of the 100 penis prints she always wanted, so she and her friends turn up the heat on their quest to complete the collection. The first 99 are acquired without too much trouble, but number 100 turns out to be quite the challenge, a challenge that Mimei is up to, and so begins the battle of the sexes.

This movie is absolutely hilarious. Mimei's quest is a noble one, and this film is one of the many examples in Roman Porno of women's sexual explorations taking precedent over men's stories. There are a lot of violent films out there, in fact our next is one, but I have thoroughly enjoyed these alternative romps through female sexuality. The lesbian friends, Masumi and Rei, are unfortunate stereotypes of man-hating dykes, but even their conquests are amusing as one of them has a fetish for pegging (look it up), and loves binding her men and "forcing" them to turn gay, usually while shouting "TURN GAY!" at them. It's amazing and I laughed till I cried. However, the real focal point of the film is the quest for the final cock, and it's a doozy.

While most men in Mimei's collection of just happy to be invited to the party, so the speak, the last one is the real crown jewel. He is a man who is so confident of his sexual abilities that he will only allow Mimei to take his imprint if she can make his achieve "ultimate ecstasy". She accepts the challenge, but what follows is nothing less than a series of ridiculous marathon humps in which Mimei and her suitor engage in coitus for 50+ hours at a time. There are some great punchlines that I don't want to give away, but these are truly epic sex scenes that must be seen to be believed.

I Love It From Behind!
is easily my favorite of the two films, and Impulse Pictures DVD of the film is just as good as we've come to expect from them. The widescreen image is crisp and clear with no major damage, and the audio, including a FANTASTIC '70s/'80s funk theme song, sounds great. We are once again treated to a great essay from Jasper Sharp detailing the film and its relatives in the genre as part of this great package.

sex-hunter-wet-target.jpgThe second feature in today's double is Sex Hunter: Wet Target, a roughie that's a rape revenge story of a different stripe than we are used to in the west. When Okamoto is released from a long stretch in jail to find that his beloved sister has died at the hands of a group of American service men, she goes completely apeshit in his quest for vengeance. What follows is a physical and sexual violence on a large scale, some welcome, but mostly in retribution for the wrong that has been done. It's a tough one to watch, and those seeking spank bank material might find themselves switching the film off a bit early, however, this is what makes Roman Pornos interesting, they don't exist solely and masturbation material, they are films in which sexuality is explored as part of a larger context. Sure, some folks will get off to this violent story, however, I appreciated it on a different level than that.

Okamoto's fantasies and methods are violent in nature. Even though he uses sex as his weapon, there is very little that is sexual about his urges, they are about power. The complexity of the film lays in its relationship to its audience. We are asked to relate to Okamoto as the doting brother seeking revenge for his fallen sibling, but the nature of that revenge, while ultimately about the killers, is more about inflicting pain, either sexual or emotional. He uses violence against women as a tool to inflict pain upon men and an outlet to vent his frustrations when the story of his sister's killing becomes more clear. All the while, our antihero is living out our vicarious urges on screen, or is he?

At what point do we stop relating with the protagonist of the story? Sex Hunter: Wet Target is a violent film with a violent lead and scenes of violence against both men and women. Surely there are some viewers for whom this is fantasy fulfillment, I don't count myself among those viewers, but they are out there. As a viewer of the film, at what point as we asked to compromise our own humanity in the search for revenge? When do we stop being human and become conscience-less animals? It's an interesting question. In the end, we do get our revenge, but at what cost? The finale is satisfying, but do we arrive there in spite of the journey or because of it? I ending up thinking about this a lot more than I expected, and you may as well. Sex Hunter: Wet Target is not for the faint of heart, it's a tough one, but you just may get something out of it that I didn't.

Impulse's release of Sex Hunter: Wet Target is as good as all of their others and makes me eager to check out their first Blu-ray for Fairy in a Cage. The image is excellent, the sound is excellent, and the liner notes are excellent. If you're a fan of Roman Pornos and you don't mind something a bit more challenging and less goofy, give this one a shot, but don't say I didn't warn you.
