Spielberg To Bring Kubrick's NAPOLEON To Life!
Kubrick spent over a decade developing the project, dropping it after extensive research, location-scouting and even some early casting decisions. While small details about the project would slip out over the years, it wasn't until the exemplary Kubrick Archives publication that we got a sense of just what the film would be comprised of.
There, buried near the back, was this tease, a giant card catalogue showing all the meticulous research that SK had amassed.
Years later, Taschen made good on that promise, and released the book on what some call "the greatest unmade film of all time". Complete with script, research photos, and unique details about the pre-production process, it's a thing to behold.
Now, the Hollywood Reporter is, um, reporting that Steven Spielberg is developing the project as a mini-series for Television. While that might slightly compromise the visual scope, the epic nature of television series, particularly along the lines of other Spielberg-related projects like Band of Brothers, may in fact be the best method to execute SK's vision.
Spielberg, of course, has a long connection with Kubrick, including being the one to complete the late director's A.I. project (to what some consider mixed results).
No news yet on when production may begin, but it's an exciting development at any rate! I encourage any Kubrick fan to pick up the book, and see what the big deal is about, it's frankly mindblowing the work done on this great, unfinished project.
