THE RAID: REDEMPTION Expanding to 875 Screens
Sony Pictures Classics have been taking the sensible route to their US theatrical release of Gareth Huw Evans' acclaimed martial arts action film The Raid: Redemption. Step one: Hit the festival circuit to gauge critical response. Given ecstatic responses at Toronto, Sundance and SXSW that's one big check mark. Step two: A small initial release to see if that critical reaction will translate to the general public. Again, check. Step three: A slow expansion to see if things can be sustained.

And now? Well, apparently emboldened by the box office numbers Sony has decided that that time for caution is over. A modest expansion was previously announced for this week and that expansion has now been greatly expanded.

Put it this way: If you've been waiting for The Raid to come to a theater near you you can now rest assured that it's going to with the total screen count jumping up to 875 on Friday from the current 176. Check your local listings. And take a look at the trailer below if you need a reminder why.

Thanks to Todd for making this all happen.. I'm sure without your involvement, I'd probably would have waited at least a year/two before it hits bluray....

I saw "The Raid" in NYC with 3 other people. We all left the theater on a complete high. Do not miss this film, it's easily one of the greatest thrill ride action movies I've seen to date.

I just read this and started to get pissed because I live in alaska and never thought I would be able to see this movie on the big screen. Just saw its playing at the best theater we have and I can't wait to see this film. I have goosebumps. 13, 2012 6:18 AM

In box office mojo website the expansion will only be to 650 theatres from 176 in the previous week (180 screens). So if it's going to be 875 screens there will be couple hundreds theatres playing the movie in more than one screen?

I've heard since originally posting this that the 875 includes Canada - which is why I tweaked the headline slightly - but, yes, there will be some theaters with more than one screen by the looks of things.
