Cronenberg Gets His Freak On In First COSMOPOLIS Teaser
Are you won of those who has bemoaned the public softening of David Cronenberg? One who feels that Eastern Promises was the beginning of the end for the director of Scanners, Dead Ringers, The Fly, Videodrome, The Brood and a host of other classics? Well, it would appear that rumors of his demise have been greatly exaggerated and that the Old Dave is coming back with Cosmopolis.

Eric Packer risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day, a move that puts him in an assassin's crosshairs as he moves from place to place in a limo in a study of capitalism that takes place in a slightly futuristic metropolis.

The first teaser for the adaptation of Don Delillo's novel has arrived online and it's full of all the kink fans have come to expect from Cronenberg. It also puts to rest any worries about the casting of Robert Pattinson, who seems to fit into this world perfectly. Check it out below.

So pumped for this, but I feel like this trailer is a little misleading. I've read the book, and the tone is very different. Still, looks great.

My feelings exactly.....tone/style of the book was different from this trailer. And Pattinson is not someone I could see doing that role justice.....well....Cronenberg got a good performance out of Marilyn Chambers sooooo maybe I shouldn´t be so hard....

Can anyone explain the Enter The Void style title sequence?

GregMarch 22, 2012 2:21 PM

This looks fantastic. Only thing, what's with the diss of the incredibly intense "Eastern Promises?" How is it soft? I thought that was a stellar film, one of my very favorites by Cronenberg along with "The Fly," "Videodrome," "Naked Lunch," "The Dead Zone" and "Rabid." One of the things I admire most about him is that he's directed such a wide variety of films that are all worth watching. Personally I think he's been on a roll with the last three Viggo movies.

Why does everyone act like Cronenberg sold his soul to Harvey Weinstein, god of middlebrow cinema, because he made two relatively tame films in the past few years? Has everyone completely forgotten about Dead Zone, hell, or even The Fly? This is hardly the first time he's flirted with the mainstream and it probably won't be the last. Auteurs should be allowed to have diverse tastes too.
Anyways, amazing trailer, though from what I've heard the actual story is rather dry and cerebral, which would be in line with the author's other books. Regardless of whether this is movie trailer sorcery or if Cronenberg has put a very stylish spin on the source I'm looking forward to it.

Yea i totally got the same vibe from the trailer. It could be just the trailer editing though.

Didn't say I agreed with the sentiment that people have regarded Cronenberg's recent films, but there's absolutely no denying that it's a very, very common sentiment. All I said was that if you're one of the people that feel that way then this should make you rather happy ...

Mr. CavinMarch 22, 2012 7:53 PM

Don't worry about it, Greg. He's just kindly acknowledging the existence of people like me who thought Eastern Promises was a vapid TV-level foray into the plight of some boring cyphers navigating cliche eastern exoticism. Have no fear! Just because we exist doesn't mean we're right! A little quibble, though: Cronenberg's career started downhill with the admittedly better a History of Violence.

I have a lot of hope for this new one as well.

I consider Spider his greatest film. I rarely see it mentioned in Cronenberg discussions.

Joshua ChaplinskyMarch 23, 2012 1:31 PM

I'd like to reiterate that, given the source material, I see this being more similar to his last few films than his earlier work.

omg this will reduce RP haters a lot! :D
