IFFR 2011: awards time!

Time flies and this weekend saw the end already of this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam. Expect loads of reviews and several interviews over the next few days!

Friday marked the big event where the actual Tiger Awards were granted, but there were loads more over the past week. Here is a quick overview.

The three Tiger Awards (only given for a director's first or second film):

"Eternity" by Sivaroj Kongsakul (Thailand, 2010)
"Finisterrae" by Sergio Caballero (Spain, 2010)
"The Journals of Musan" by Park Jung-Bum (South Korea)

This last film also won the FIPRESCI (international association of film critics) Award.

Also worthy of note: the Moviesquad IFFR Award, given by a jury of young people, went to Canadian director Xavier Dolan for the second year in a row: in 2010 he won it with "J'ai Tué Ma Mere" and this year he won again with "Les Amours Imaginaires".
Any plans for next year, Xavier? Make sure the title of your next film rhymes with "air", apparently it brings luck!

It was a strong year for Canada as "Incendies" won the UPC Audience Award with a whopping 4.739 out of 5.

Aw maaaan... not a single one of the Tiger nominees I've seen this year actually won a price. Seems like next year we need at least three or four guys here to cover the festival, just to make a visible dint in the huge program!
