US Trailer For Zhang Yimou's A WOMAN, A GUN AND A NOODLE SHOP
Last we we ran the US poster for Zhang Yimou's remake of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple promising that it would soon be followed by a domestic trailer. And soon is now.

Released as A Woman, A Gun And A Noodle Shop, the Chinese marketing for the film revolved largely around the comic elements but for the US trailer it's all thriller, all the time. Check it below.

not sure if chinese government funding of this act is a political one or an artistic one. seems a bit facetious to me - trailer had that 'hero epicy music' and glossy sheen, but wasnt the original a tense thriller? this mofoshit just seemed weird . had all the right oscar worthy comments in place...vanity magazine says ' wonderful' spleen magazine says ' gorgeous' etc etc but i dunno, seemed a bit empty. bit like his previous efforts. anyway, hopefully it can be judged on its own merits but id rather watch porn instead.

Well, unlike the previous English subtitled trailer, this is clearly a film which is a remake of BLOOD SIMPLE - even if they didn't beat me over the head with it, I'd have figured it out, but beat me over the head with it they did. I wouldn't have guessed it was a trailer for the same film as the earlier one, but whatever. All in all it's above average for a US trailer for a Chinese film - which is sort of like getting Second Place at the Upper Class Twit Of The Year competition.

According to Variety Sony cut out four minutes. So, yeah, they almost had my money for a second there. Now they get nothing.

Why do they even bother cutting out 4 minutes? It's gone from annoying to fucking ridiculous.

So the slapstick stuff is gone?

plissken2013August 10, 2010 3:52 AM

I wanna check that one, it looks beautiful and funny.

If people go to see this based solely on that there trailer they are in for a shock. The first half of the film leans heavily on goofy OTT Chniese slapstick. Good as this trailer is, it rather misrepresents the film, which is a shame because the film is good! If Sont really did cut 4 minutes out, it was most likely to water down the goofiness - still a crime.
