When I wrote about Pavel Sanaev's Na Igre (Hooked) a few months back I called it "simply one of the best films about video games and gaming culture ever made", the scifi-action fantasy perfectly capturing the escapist thrill that draws people to video games in the first place. With a little bit of distance now between myself and that first viewing I'm now prepared to go a little bit farther than that and say that - provided part two pays off as well as part one - Na Igre may very well be the high point of the current wave of Russian genre film. Yes, better than Night Watch. These are tighter, slicker, more thoroughly entertaining films.
Now, the original Na Igre was not at all intended to be a stand-alone film. It ended in an abrupt cliff hanger that pointed towards the upcoming second part, which would finish the story. That second piece is due for release this month and the trailer has just arrived, promising a much higher action quotient than the first as the super-powered gamers struggle to get their old lives back while also stopping the widespread distribution and weaponization of the gaming CDs that gave them their powers in the first place. Check the trailer below!
