After the monster success of last Summer's 내 이름은 김삼순 (My Lovely Sam-Soon), box office queen Kim Seon-Ah has finally chosen her next project, and it's a little surprising. Usually starring in comedies, Kim will star in her first thriller, Yoon Jae-Goo's 목요일의 아이 (Thursday's Child), which is starting its shoot this August. Kim has always been a fan of police procedural and thrillers, so she made her final choice based on that. In the film, Kim plays a lawyer working against the clock for a brutal killer, who kidnapped her daughter to ensure she'll try her best to protect him (to save her daughter, obviously). Kim receives a call from the killer one day, saying that if she wants to find her daughter alive, she'll have to win an appeal for a condemned criminal in a week. Although Kim already had 'serious' roles in the past, like her supporting role in the Sci-Fi Blockbuster 예스터데이(Yesterday), this is the first time she tries her hand at a thriller. This is Director Yoon's film debut, and although there's no word yet on release, it should be around Christmas/early 2007. [nKino]

And since we're talking about Sam-Soon, it's been announced PD Kim Yoon-Cheol, the man behind last year's MBC Drama, will make his directing debut. Kim will infact lead 안녕 아니야 (It's Not a Goodbye), a romantic comedy written by Hwang In-Ho of 시실리 2km (To Catch a Virgin Ghost) and 도마뱀 (Love Phobia). Kim received about 50 scripts to choose from, and while most of them were romcoms, he said he'll try to make a film in line with Working Title's works, with a mix of reality and warmth thrown in the mix. Kim is a MFA from Calarts, and won prizes at the Montecarlo Film Festival for his HD Drama 늪 (The Swamp). The film will start casting soon, and then enter shooting from next month. [nKino]

We talked a little last week about the upcoming Omnibus project by Kim Jee-woon, Im Pil-Sung and Han Jae-Rim, but more details leaked out this week. First, the [Korean] title, which will be 인류멸망 보고서 (Doomsday Book) -- 멋진 신세계 (A Cool New World) was just the name of one of the parts. This is one of the few SF projects in the making, in a country rarely associated with the genre. We start with 천상의 피조물 (Heaven's Creation), which is a surrealist story about a Robot working at a temple and his road to enlightenment in a futuristic world populated by robots and humans -- sort of A.I. meets 달마야 놀자 (Hi, Dharma), I'm guessing -- and is directed by Kim Jee-woon of 달콤한 인생 (A Bittersweet Life) and 장화, 홍련 (A Tale of Two Sisters). The interesting thing here is not so much that Kim Gang-Woo, who's been cast in the film, was chosen for his excellent work in Jung Jae-Eun's 태풍태양 (The Aggressives). No, Kim wanted him already for A Bittersweet Life (I'm guessing in Eric Moon's role, although I could be wrong), but because of The Aggressives he couldn't. Kim was Director Kim's first choice for the role.

Second part is 멋진 신세계 (A Cool New World), from Im Pil-Sung, the director of last year's fantastic 남극일기 (Antarctic Journal). This is the zombie film Ryu Seung-Beom was cast in a couple of weeks ago, and Ryu Seung-Wan's brother will star as a trash eating young zombie, with a mix of black comedy and 'hardcore action'. The final part 크리스마스 선물 (Christmas Gift) is a SF Musical adapted from an O. Henry short novel, about a couple of lovers' primal desires emerging when confronted with their last chance to escape Earth before its downfall. The film is directed by Han Jae-Rim, who not only directed last year's delightful 연애의 목적 (Rules of Dating), but is also working on Song Kang-Ho's next, 우아한 세계 (A Wonderful World). The interesting thing? Legendary Japanese Music Director Kanno Yoko is on board for this (!!). Each part will have a budget of 1.5 Billion Won, and the first two will start shooting this month (the musical in June), for an early 2007 release. Those in Cannes might get a few more infos about the film, as Lucy Film is starting pre-sales at the Cannes Film Market right now. We'll follow this film in depth, as it looks quite interesting.
