Yoo Seon-Dong's '미스터 주부퀴즈왕' ('Mr. Housewife), the latest comedy starring Han Suk-Gyu, Shin Eun-Kyung and Kim Soo-Mi, had its press screening at the Megabox in Samsung-dong last September 13. Han plays an unemployed husband in a family where (as the poster suggests) the mother is the breadwinner. But his life changes for the better when he suddenly starts appearing on TV Quiz shows... for housewives. This is the first Shin Eun-Kyung film since the popular star married and had a baby, and for Kim Soo-Mi - now more than ever a really popular face - it's another chance to show her ad-lib prowess in full force. The comedy debuts on September 29

Interviews and Comments

Press: Your introduction...
Director Yoo Seon-Dong: It's my debut, and I think of it as a genre film, a 'Home Comic Drama.' While following the rules of the genre, I wanted to add my personal colour, I'm curious if that will emerge from watching the film.
Han Suk-Gyu: It's my 12th film. When reading a script, the first impression is always important to me. That sense of enjoyment and fun, and its tranquility in the second half... I really liked that feeling. I wanted to transmit that kind of feeling to the viewers as well. I and the other actors Shin Eun-Kyung and Gong Hyung-Jin completed shooting in a really nice atmosphere. Even if you always feel sad after completing a film, my sense of satisfaction is even bigger this time. I feel the end result lived up to my expectations. The rest is up to the viewer to decide.
Gong Hyung-Jin: Have you seen the film? Did I do well? I won't bring out hackneyed phrases like thanking you for coming even with such nasty weather. You probably came because it was worth coming, right? (laughs) A really fun and happy feeling emerged from watching the film. Of course I have some complaints, but that's just my personal greed. I cried twice, but it's not important how many times I cried or laughed. I liked the fact I could feel the exact things I wanted you viewers to feel, in working on the film.

Lee Ju-Hyeon: It's my first time doing this. I liked the fact that after watching the film, I was reminded of the people I love. It's been ten years, but I'm still the youngest. I liked working with such nice senior colleagues.

Press: To play this kind of character, is there any other film you referred to?
Han: I neither referred to any person nor film. And that's not just me, it's the same thing for my fellow colleagues. That's because it's just a character which needs more imagination. Personally I liked this experience because I worked with nice colleagues like Shin, Gong and others. I have developed a really good relationship with Gong, every time we shot it was a lot of fun.
Gong: Personally I'm someone who has a lot of greed towards people. I used to think I wanted to become the kind of actor people want to work with. Honestly, how many people wouldn't want to work with Han Suk-Gyu? The moment I heard he was cast in this film, I accepted the role without even looking at the scipt. This is the kind of film which will hit your feelings repeatedly, like '파이란' ('Failan'). There's no need to introduce Shin Eun-Kyung, and as for Lee Ju-Hyeon, he's someone I like a lot. Hitting while we fight, that is... I'm just joking.

Press: Any particular thought on changing your image? And how was working with a first time director?
Han: No thoughts in particular. I never really planned any strategy for my next projects, like: "Next time let's do a comedy." I just looked at the script, and felt it was the kind of film I wanted to work in, trying as hard as I could to make people like it as much as I did. I liked the fact it was a comedy, that you can connect with it without burdens, the fact it's the genre that displays the most powerful feelings. This is not the first time I work with a debut director, I've done it many times. I always think there are more positives than negatives [in doing that]. First time directors always strive to do something new, so working with them allows you to do something that's always new, never falling into mannerisms. That's the biggest positive factor in working with them.

Press: How do you feel after completing this film?
Han: I always wanted to do something for kids, a movie or animation film. At the end, we weren't able to get the 'General' rating we applied for, but with a '12 and Over,' just about everybody will be able to watch it. One important part for me was the fact you can go and watch this with your whole family. And that's someone I could never say for my previous films. I just liked that.

Yoo: It's been a really fun time, working with all the cast and crew. But I'm still not good enough, I need to work harder. I feel the need to do better, create a better synergy, that kind of obvious feeling.
Gong: I'm tired. I was tired. I even dreamed of wanting to rest. All the films you work in are important, you always become attached to them. But based on my standards, a film like this is something you can count on your fingers. I hope to meet another film like this in the future. In other words, I will remember this film for a long time.

Press Reaction

Herald Economy's Lee Hyung-Seok: It's a film safely following the formulas of commercial comedy. The fact it doesn't approach social prejudices and changes in an old-fashioned, uncomfortable way is one of the film's virtues. Returning after a longtime to this kind of serene type of film, Han Suk-Gyu's acting is quite good. With that in mind, it's regretful the film uses its second half to put on a pedestal the fact a man is taking care of household chores, without even mocking or satirizing the notion that it's incredibly rare to see men do that instead of women, with the intent to make him become some kind of hero to the people. It's a comedy that follows common sense, with neither big merits nor bit weaknesses.
