Returning to the big screen after the huge success of his directorial debut '마파도' ('Mapado'), director Chu Chang-Min and the stars of his latest film '사랑을 놓치다' ('Lost in Love') had a press conference in Daejeon, last September 27. The melodrama marks a return to films for Song Yoon-Ah, and the first melodrama for Seol Kyung-Gu (although some of his previous films had elements of the genre). In addition, the two already worked together in Kim Sang-Jin's 2002 comedy '광복절 특사' ('Jail Breakers'). The three had a brief interview with the press:

Press: I wanted to ask the director, why choose a melodrama after being so successful with a comedy? Please introduce shortly what kind of film 'Lost in Love' is.
Director Chu Chang-Min: I fell in love with the script long before I debuted. I did start my career with a comedy, but I wanted to follow that with a melodrama from the beginning. There are a few common points between the synopsis and the title, our film is like that. It might not necessarily end up as the title suggests [Korean title means 'letting go of, missing, losing love], but isn't love something you mostly let go of? Keeping that in mind, it looked like the title fit with the ending of the film really well.

Press: Did you make any particular preparation for this film?

Seol Kyung-Gu: Not really (laughs). There's a rowing scene: I was supposed to use a single, but eventually we ended up using a two-seater. The boat was too small, so balancing ourselves was really hard. We were only able to shoot after using a two-seater, since there was someone else helping me. Before working in Kang Woo-Suk's '공공의적2' ('Another Public Enemy') I exercised so hard and often that I grew tired of it. Ten days before beginning the shoot, I weighed in at 86 Kilos. It didn't look right, so in that short time I lost 6 Kilos. There was nothing really significant to prepare for, it wasn't that kind of film. And, since I was working with Song Yoon-Ah, it was comfortable right from the beginning.

Press: You usually starred in films with a high masculine factor, how did you end up in a melodrama, of all films?
Seol: I keep saying I've only done melodramas up to now, but you people don't accept that. '오아시스' ('Oasis') and '박하사탕' ('Peppermint Candy') were melodrama, and so was '나도 아내가 있었으면 좋겠다' ('I Wish I Had A Wife'). I just feel I kept starring in big budget films with a lot of emphasis on visuals, more than smaller scale films. It probably was my sense of confidence dictating my choosing of roles that were so far apart, like in '실미도' ('Silmido') and '역도산' ('Rikidozan: A Hero Extraordinary'). Still, 'Lost in Love' is the kind of film which might not impress at first sight, so it wasn't easy. Actually, because of that, it was even harder. There isn't a tragic turning point in the story, but the film tries to give a place to people living in the surroundings. You might consider it a trifling ploy to make money, but our intention was to make something with an even closure, something really solid.

Song Yoon-Ah: More than any particular reason why, I'll tell you what I feel. I've been acting for ten years already, I still feel like a newcomer, but time flies like that. I've worked on many TV Dramas and films, but up to now people have been identifying my name with TV Dramas, as a popular face acting on Tv. With 'Lost in Love', I had a kind of expectation, of this becoming the film that allows me to have something to stand on, to build my career as a film actress from. Also, I worked on the film thinking that if people could remember or be impressed by my role in this film even a year or two later, there's nothing more I could ask.

Press: I've heard you wrote the script yourself, using your experiences as a background. How autobiographical is the film? You also must have expected a lot from Seol, but was there anything in particular?
Chu: The story of 'Lost in Love' has been developing over ten years. It starts from the college age and lasts until the character's thirties. I didn't see too many actors with the ability to show the depth and strength of the passing of time. I knew Seol was one of them, and am really thankful he agreed to participate in this film. I think most people here have experienced love at least once. I tried to show the kind of love story anyone could experience, and relate to. Be it experiencing disappointments, or telling your feelings to the woman you love, it's something you've all experienced. It's that kind of relaxing story.

Press: We can't help but talk about 'Mapado'. With a small investment and no box office draws you experienced great success. Are box office expectations a burden for you?
Chu: I said this with Seol, if we make 500 Won with this film, I'll buy 5 Million Won's worth of drinks. More than making a financially successful film, I wanted to make something of a higher quality, with a nice closure. Even with 'Mapado' I didn't start with its box office potential in mind. I don't think any director can go into a film's shoot knowing whether it'll make money or not.
